Barry Odom is expected to bring a key defensive coach with him from Arkansas to UNLV, as the former Razorbacks defensive coordinator fills out his new staff.

Odom is targeting linebackers coach Michael Scherer, Bruce Feldman of FOX Sports and The Athletic reported, as the 29-year old former Mizzou star linebacker played and coached for Odom. Feldman added that Scherer is expected to get a coordinator role at UNLV.

Scherer was in his second season as Arkansas’ linebackers coach after his promotion from defensive analyst before the 2020 season.

Scherer and Arkansas linebackers Grant Morgan and Bumper Pool have enjoyed success in recent seasons. Scherer’s linebackers fueled a defensive improvement that allowed 84 yards less in 2021 than 2020, including 39 fewer yards per game rushing.

Scherer played linebacker at Mizzou from 2012-16, and made 266 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, with a sack and one interception, as he appeared in 38 games over his four-year career.
