Kirby Smart released a statement on Wednesday following the news that former defensive lineman Jalen Carter has been implicated in the death of Devin Willock and UGA recruiting staffer Chandler LeCroy.

Carter is the subject of multiple arrest warrants for racing and reckless driving, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department announced Wednesday morning. Carter initially told police he was more than 1 mile away from the accident when it occurred.

Police say they have evidence that LeCroy and Carter were racing at the time of the accident.

Smart called the charges “deeply concerning” in a statement shortly after that announcement was made. Here’s his statement:

“The charges announced today are deeply concerning, especially as we are still struggling to cope with the devastating loss of two beloved members of our community.

“We will continue to cooperate fully with the authorities while supporting these families and assessing what we can learn from this horrible tragedy.”

Carter, a potential top pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, is in Indianapolis for the NFL Combine on Wednesday.
