Greg McElroy is a big believer in LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels.

McElroy said in a segment for Always College Football this week that he believes Daniels is the top returning quarterback in the SEC. One major reason why is the growth that Daniels showed from the beginning of last season to the end.

“The best quarterback returning in the SEC is Jayden Daniels,” McElroy said. “Tell me a player that looked more comfortable in their final game of the season than the first game of the season than Jayden Daniels. And think about the progression that was made when he played against Florida State to where we saw him in the bowl game when he was completely lights out.”

Daniels struggled to throw the ball in last year’s season-opening loss to Florida State. He threw for just 209 yards on 34 attempts — numbers that were inflated by a pair of late touchdown drives.

By the bowl game, Daniels was much more efficient. He completed 12-of-17 passes for 139 yards in a blowout victory over Purdue. He also rushed for over 11 yards per attempt in that contest.

He enters 2023 as one of the top preseason Heisman Trophy contenders in the SEC.

“If you look across the board, man, he’s got everything that you could want,” McElroy added. “And now another year in the system.”
