TUSCALOOSA, Ala. _ Two weeks ago University of Alabama coach Nick Saban expressed his frustration regarding the numerous questions about who will be his starting quarterback this season.

So Wednesday morning a Crimson Tide beat reporter asked about it during the first coaches’ teleconference and got a gruff response.

After the reporter implied that senior Blake Sims had not been allowed to take the full rein of the offense even though in situations like this the experienced player typically gets the start, he asked: “What happened in camp?”

“Nothing’s really happened in camp, but I think both guys have played well,” Saban said. “I think it’s our responsibility to give both guys an opportunity. That’s how we recruit players to come here, that they’re all going to get a fair opportunity to play. We’re going to choose the best players that give our team the best opportunity to be successful based on how they perform.

“Both guys have performed well, and Blake has performed very, very well. Nobody ever said that he wasn’t going to start the game so I don’t know why you would make those kind of assumptions.”

The follow-up question during which the reporter claimed he wasn’t make any assumptions didn’t go any better.

“There’s no hypothetical,” Saban said. “I’m not going to answer hypothetical questions. Our situation here is our situation here. I’ve been very upfront with how we’re managing it and how we’re handling it, which I think is best for our team and our players and that’s all I care about. And I don’t care about typically anything or any hypothetical.”

Sims is competing with Florida State transfer Jacob Coker for the starting job. A starter has not been named, but both quarterbacks are expected to play against West Virginia on Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET, ABC/ESPN2).

Saban is scheduled to meet with reporters after Wednesday’s practice and will also host his first radio show of the season on Thursday.
