Stop me if you’ve heard this before.

Arkansas running backs dominated the first half of play.

Once again, Bret Bielema’s three-headed rushing attack is wreaking havoc and this week’s victim is the Texas Tech defense. So far in the first 30 minutes of football, Arkansas has racked up 151 rushing yards.

As the game has gone on, you can see the Red Raiders’ defense wearing down, thanks to some very physical play by Arkansas’ offensive line. Holes are opening up for the backs and both Collins and Williams have been superb in pushing for extra yards after contact and they’ve combined for 110 yards between the two of them.

A perfect example of just how effective Arkansas’ power offense has been came on the Hogs’ third drive of the game. The Razorbacks ran 11 plays and every single play was a run play and Texas Tech could do nothing to stop it as the Hogs pounded the middle of their defense for 68 yards on their way to a score.

“It’s just smash mouth football which is the way we like to play,” Bielema said after the first half. “I think our offense is doing a nice job of moving the football. I don’t think we need to get cute.”

Unfortunately for the Hogs, Texas Tech’s Air Raid offense has been slicing and dicing the Razorbacks’ secondary. With the exception of some poor decisions late in the second quarter by quarterback Davis Webb, he has thrown to nine different receivers and completed 18 of his 30 passing attempts. The up-tempo speed of the offense continues to give Arkansas’ defense trouble. It certainly had the same look as the Hogs’ season-opener against Auburn.

So far, it’s been completely back-and-forth as both teams have been trading scores. With how vulnerable Arkansas has looked against the Air Raid, it’s especially important that the Hogs control the time of possession and win the turnover battle. They failed to protect the ball late in the half on a fumbled trick play, but were bailed out by a terrible interception by Webb, which led to the Hogs’ go-ahead score.

Hogs lead 28-21 at half in turnover prone, offensive shootout in Lubbock. They’ll need to keep forcing Webb into some bad decisions if they want to expand this lead in the second half.
