Here’s how Vanderbilt graded in its Week 5 loss to Kentucky.

OFFENSE: F

Vanderbilt’s offense saw another abysmal showing on Saturday. The Commodores were held out of the end zone the entire game for the third time this season and totaled just 139 yards. Ralph Webb, who has been Vanderbilt’s only consistent bright spot, was held to just 44 yards on 13 carries.

DEFENSE: B-

Darrius Sims managed to single-handedly keep Vanderbilt in its game for the second consecutive week. Sims returned an interception for a touchdown in the second quarter to tie the game at 7-7. The Commodores also forced two fumbles on defense. However, Patrick Towles enjoyed an efficient performance with 201 yards and a touchdown on 23-of-30 passing.

SPECIAL TEAMS: C+

Dallas Rivers recorded 19 yards on two attempts and Darrius Sims totaled 15 on one return. Colby Cooke totaled 358 yards, a 44.8 average and three punts inside the 20-yard line on eight attempts. His longest punt of the game was 63 yards.

COACHING: D

Derek Mason coached conservatively in Saturday’s game. The Commodores looked to avoid costly turnovers, but failed with three interceptions. Vanderbilt was heavily outmatched by an improved Kentucky team and lacked the personnel to pull off an upset.

OVERALL: D

Vanderbilt’s offense was the true catalyst for Saturday’s outcome. A 17-7 loss doesn’t seem like a cause for concern, but the Commodores inability to produce any offense sure does. Vanderbilt needs Patton Robinette to make a speedy recovery in order to capture wins in the SEC.
