The eighth installment of our SEC Heisman Watch features several players with starpower:

SIZZLING

  • Dak Prescott, QB, Mississippi State: Playing so well recently that he’s been mentioned in early exit NFL talks, the junior quarterback will try and keep it going for the Bulldogs this week at Kentucky with an extra week to prepare. The Wildcats are much-improved defensively, but haven’t faced a quarterback of Prescott’s skill level or dual-threat capability thus far.
  • Senquez Golson, DB, Ole Miss: It’s difficult to dominate games on an island from the cornerback position but that’s exactly what Golson’s doing for the third-ranked Rebels at this point of the season. One interception behind Louisville’s Gerod Holliman for the nation’s lead, Golson picked off Justin Worley twice during Ole Miss’ 34-3 win over Tennessee on Saturday night.

WARM

  • Josh Robinson, RB, Mississippi State: Robinson gets another chance in the national spotlight in Lexington to impress Heisman voters. Another 150-yard, multi-touchdown game would do the trick and would also give him the SEC lead in total rushing yards.
  • Amari Cooper, WR, Alabama: Texas A&M sagged off Cooper at the line of scrimmage early during Saturday’s 59-0 shellacking and the star wideout made the Aggies’ soft secondary pay to the tune of 140 yards and two touchdowns on eight catches. It was the first time in nearly a month that Cooper returned to early-season All-American form.
  • Nick Marshall, QB, Auburn: The veteran quarterback has a huge opportunity in his next start Saturday night to put up impressive numbers against the SEC’s worst defense (South Carolina) based on yards per play (6.1). The Gamecocks have often struggled against run-heavy offenses in the past, especially a Top 5 team on the road they haven’t beaten in more than 80 years.
  • Nick Chubb, RB, Georgia: What’s so far-fetched about giving this true freshman some love, a player whose replaced the nation’s best back without missing a beat? In two starts since Todd Gurley’s suspension, Chubb’s carried the football 30 times for 202 yards and has led the Bulldogs to consecutive road wins in the SEC. If he keeps it up, he deserves offensive freshman of the year honors and perhaps more.

OFF THE RADAR

  • Todd Gurley, RB, Georgia: Two missed games likely eliminates Gurley from any real Heisman hopes. Mark Richt has continued to stress over the last two weeks that he’ll update America on his tailback’s status for the remainder of the season when he receives word, but both parties — NCAA and Georgia — have dragged their feet.
  • Kenny Hill, QB, Texas A&M: Kenny Trill’s a distant memory. Credit the sophomore for trying to rally the troops in the second quarter of last weekend’s embarrassing loss to Alabama, but it was a defeat that all but ended his Heisman hopes as the leader of an offense that’s no longer as potent as we once thought.
