Football is the ultimate team sport. However, many football teams are nothing without a good quarterback.

Us quarterbacks get the blame for losses, and also the glory for wins. Sometimes it’s justified and sometimes it’s not fair.

Let’s take a look at the most interesting quarterback battle in this week’s slate of games in the SEC.

This weekend of college football isn’t as great as the previous few weeks, but there is a hell of quarterback battle this weekend down in Oxford, Miss., that could make up for it. Nick Marshall leads the No. 4 Auburn Tigers down to The Grove to face Bo Wallace and the No. 7 Ole Miss Rebels.

Even with the Rebels’ loss at the hands of LSU last week in Death Valley, and despite the late-game controversy surrounding Mr. Wallace, he has played very well this season. He’s among the leaders in the league in passing, and is having his best year as a Rebel. He didn’t have his best showing against LSU and he’s caught flack for it, but that LSU defense is legit, especially at home at night. Wallace called Death Valley “the craziest place” he’s ever played.

He gets the chance to rebound and get the Rebels back on track against an Auburn defense that Dylan Thompson and the South Carolina offense torched last week. They will watch a ton of film to try and figure out how to move the ball as well as Carolina did against the Tigers defense under defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson.

It won’t be an easy task, as Auburn has been playing some decent defenses this year. It is a bend, but don’t break type defense from the looks of things. I think Wallace and the Rebels will benefit from watching film all week, and especially will enjoy playing at home.

On the other side of the ball, you have quarterback Nick Marshall. The offenses differ a wee bit, but both quarterbacks are perfect for the system they run. Marshall is coming off an efficient game against the Gamecocks, and he’s looking better as a passer with every week that passes.

The Gamecock defense is near the bottom of nearly every defensive statistic in the country, and Marshall and that offense exploited it, scoring touchdowns on six straight possessions. Auburn has its hands full this weekend against an Ole Miss defense that is one of the best in the nation.

Safety Cody Prewitt will have the Rebels defense fired up. They have a tough task ahead preparing for one of the best rushing offenses in the country, one that does an excellent job incorporating tempo.

It could be a low-scoring game like Ole Miss-LSU, but I could also seeing it being a shootout like the South Carolina game. I am leaning toward the latter because I think both quarterbacks will have pretty big games.

It’s going to come down to Marshall and his passing ability, because the Rebels defense will stack the line of scrimmage. Buckle up folks, this will be a good one.
