Texas A&M has opened up the battle for its starting quarterback position, according to offensive coordinator Jake Spavital. That means that Kenny Hill, who got off to a record-setting pace to open the season, is in jeopardy of being benched for touted freshman Kyle Allen.

The Aggies have seen their offense plummet back to earth in recent weeks, hitting rock bottom with a 59-0 loss to Alabama two weeks ago. Following that loss, Spavital and head coach Kevin Sumlin said they’d be evaluating every position on offense, including quarterback.

Hill set a school record with 511 yards in Texas A&M’s opener, but has been more pedestrian since then. He threw for 138 yards and an interception against Alabama and was lifted for Allen in the fourth quarter. Hill and Allen were in competition for the starting job before the season, with Hill winning out. The sophomore has started every game this season for the Aggies.
