Here’s how the Tennessee Volunteers graded after their 24-17 win over Vanderbilt.

OFFENSE: C-

Joshua Dobbs was held to 92 yards and two interceptions on 11-of-20 passing. But the sophomore was Tennessee’s leading rusher with 91 yards and two touchdowns on 21 attempts. Running back Jalen Hurd exited in the first quarter and had 21 yards on five carries.

DEFENSE: A

Tennessee’s defense forced three interceptions. Justin Coleman, Todd Kelly Jr. and Brian Randolph each picked off Vanderbilt quarterbacks Patton Robinette and Johnny McCrary. Curt Maggitt added two sacks to his team-best total of 11. Derek Barnett also had a sack, extending his school freshman record to 10.

SPECIAL TEAMS: A

Aaron Medley was 1-of-1 on his only field goal attempt. Matt Darr punted seven times and averaged 48.4 yards. His longest punt was 60 yards and he landed two inside the 20-yard line.

COACHING: B-

Despite a small margin against a weak opponent, Tennessee did enough to capture its sixth victory. However, the offense saw a disappointing output, with Dobbs throwing for under 100 yards. Mike Bajakian continues to run screen plays when the team needs to throw the football downfield.

OVERALL: B

Tennessee got the victory, which is the most important factor. But the win was ugly facing a 17-point underdog. The Vols fought injuries, which played a factor in the final score being so close. But the performance was far from ideal as Vanderbilt had its most impressive defensive performance in conference play.
