Five-star defensive tackle Daron Payne praised Auburn for hiring Will Muschamp as its defensive coordinator on Saturday.

Payne, a defensive tackle for Shades Valley in Birmingham, Ala., is uncommitted and acknowledged the Muschamp hire could have an impact on his decision.

“It sort of makes me think harder about my decision,” the 6-foot-3 inch, 335-pound Payne told the Montgomery Advertiser. “It’s a great hire. We’ll just wait it out. I don’t know much about him. I just know he’s a great coach.”

According to ESPN.com, Payne holds offers from Auburn, Alabama, Florida State, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Georgia, Clemson, South Carolina, Texas and Kentucky.

Payne was expected to meet with Muschamp for the first time on Sunday.

Former defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson was never known for his recruiting prowess, as Muschamp is. Auburn commit Jalen Harris hopes Muschamp’s recruiting efforts can help the Tigers land Payne and a host of other prospects like him.

“I was talking to Daron Payne and he was like, ‘man, I like the Muschamp hire.’ So hopefully we can get him and a lot more big-time, five-star recruits and big-time commits like him,” Harris told the Montgomery Advertiser.
