UGA head coach Mark Richt spoke to the media following Georgia’s 37-14 win over Louisville in the Belk Bowl. Here’s some of what he had to say.

On coaching in the SEC

I coached for 15 years at Florida State and one year at ECU. Taking the Georgia job was an exciting opportunity for me and my family. You know it’s a rugged league. You look at Arkansas and they were 6-6 and look at the year they had … they had a couple of really close games, if they could have won a couple of those close ones they might have made it to the SEC Championship … the passion of our fans is by far the most exciting thing about our league

On Brice Ramsey’s performance

He came in really, really cold. That first throw he had, that’s a pick. We decided to take a shot … but he didn’t even have one opportunity to warm up. We were assessing Hutson [Mason] at the last moment … so we were just scrambling to get him in the game. He did some good things. He made a couple of nice throws in some big moments … he made some mistakes, too. It was a big responsibility, but overall he secured the ball well. He did a good job.

On ending season with a win

It’s great to win, period. Losing stinks. Losing leaves a bad taste in your mouth … it’s not fun to lose, period. I’m glad for our seniors sake and our team’s sake that we had another game to play… It’s nice to finish a season with a victory and 10 wins is a pretty good benchmark for a season.

On rumors of stepping down

I have no idea [why those rumors were floating around].

On if he plans on returning

That’s the plan.

On if he envisioned running the ball as well as they did

We knew that was a big part of what we do. We weren’t going to shy away from it … before you know it you break out with a couple of big ones. You have to be patient when you run the football. We were successful all year and we were tonight.

On Nick Chubb and if he knew he was going to be this good

We know Nick is a good player. The timing of when Nick took over — you had Todd’s situation, Keith’s injury and a Sony Michel injury. So he had to carry the rock a bunch … but Nick having to do what he had to do and proving he could withstand the rigors of it — the pounding aspect of it and the conditioning aspect of it — it certainly wasn’t a mystery to us that he could do something like this.
