Just three days removed from the rumors that Georgia Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt may be stepping down following the Belk Bowl, UGA athletic director Greg McGarity announced Friday that he and Richt were currently working on a contract extension.

This was first reported by UGASports.com, who obtained the information via an email McGarity sent to top UGA donors.

From the report:

I look forward to working alongside Mark in the future and in helping him move our program forward in all areas. We will be working on a contract extension with Mark over the coming days. I know Mark is focused on completing his coaching staff and recruiting,” McGarity said in the email. “Our support staff is also focused on a number of construction projects, including the indoor practice facility and future enhancements to football areas in Sanford Stadium. We will keep you updated on progress in these areas as they develop.

Richt’s current contract was set to expire in 2017. The 14-year UGA coach was making $3.3 million, making him the 11th highest-paid coach in the SEC.

During his 14 years at Georgia, Richt has amassed an overall record of 136-48, which includes two SEC titles and nine double-digit win seasons. His 14 years ranks him as the longest-tenured coach in the SEC, tied with Gary Pinkel of Missouri.
