Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason officially announced the hiring of former Wisconsin offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig for the same position on Monday, as well as his plans to call the defense himself in 2015 after Wes McGriff, a target for the defensive coordinator vacancy, announced his decision to stay with the New Orleans Saints. Mason also noted that the team is still searching for both a wide receivers and cornerbacks coach.

“After weeks of deliberation and conversations with many coaches, I’ve decided to call our defense,” Mason said. “No one knows our defense and what we can accomplish with this defense more than I. At the same time, I expect to attract one of the nation’s top coaches to guide our cornerbacks.”

Mason spent three seasons as Stanford’s defensive coordinator before joining the Commodores last January. In 2012, he was a finalist for the Broyles Award, given annually to the top assistant coach in college football.

Ludwig has worked as a D1 offensive coordinator since 1997. The former wide receiver spent the past two seasons with the Badgers, also serving as the team’s quarterbacks coach.

“I am excited to welcome Andy Ludwig to Nashville and Vanderbilt University,” Mason said. “We have attracted one of the brightest offensive minds and most successful coordinators in college football to the Commodore program. Our student-athletes are gaining a tremendous mentor in Andy Ludwig, a man of integrity who demands excellence on and off the field.”

Wisconsin ranked No. 3 overall in rushing offense and No. 22 in total offense. Running back Melvin Gordon led the nation with 2,336 yards and 26 touchdowns on 309 attempts, finishing second for the Heisman Trophy.
