It’s been less than a week since John Chavis bolted LSU for Texas A&M, leaving behind a slew of frustrated players and a major hole at defensive coordinator, one that Les Miles and the Tigers are still working to fill.

Already, Chavis’ absence has created some issues on the defensive side of the recruiting trail. While Chavis wasn’t known as a recruiter at LSU, his reputation for constructing top-flight defenses was enough to draw in a bevy of recruits.

In the first week without Chavis, the Tigers have already had two recruiting misses. The first was five-star defensive tackle Daylon Mack. The former Texas A&M commit had LSU in his top two after dropping his commitment to the Aggies, and he was scheduled for an official visit to Baton Rouge this month. However, he cancelled that visit, and after the Under Armour All-American Game last week he said he is no longer considering the Tigers. Chavis could be able to bring him back into the fold at Texas A&M, but the Texas native is also considering TCU (his top choice), and could be considering Texas as well.

The following day, at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, the Tigers missed on another defensive line prospect. Four-star defensive end Kyle Phillips, a Nashville product, had LSU in his final three teams. Ugo Amadi, another Nashville native who committed to the Tigers last week, proclaimed on Twitter that Phillips would be joining him at LSU. That didn’t come to fruition, as Phillips stayed in his home state and chose to attend Tennessee.

Are LSU’s early defections a sign of Chavis’ influence? Jalen Collins was considered gone even before Chavis left, and Kwon Alexander seemed to be heading that direction as well. The surprise is Danielle Hunter, whom many thought would return to LSU for his senior year. However, Hunter reportedly told a Baton Rouge television station that he’s “not going back to LSU” and will instead enter the NFL draft.

While Hunter didn’t express disappointment on Twitter about Chavis’ exit like some of his teammates did, he did post a tweet praising the coordinator.

Chavis clearly had an impact on his defensive players, one that is being felt in a multitude of ways just days after his departure.
