Without first-team All-SEC playmaker Pharoh Cooper, the 2015 outlook could be grim for the South Carolina Gamecocks who are currently mired by seven decommitments in this year’s signing class and the program’s all-time winningest coach nearing retirement.

With a pair of multi-year starters along the offensive line on the way out along with single season record-setter Dylan Thompson at quarterback and leading rusher Mike Davis, the Gamecocks must have a spark on offense to offset the losses and Cooper, a rising junior, fits the mold.

After showing flashes as a true freshman in 2013, Cooper came into his own last fall as South Carolina’s true No. 1, catching 69 passes for 11,36 yards and nine touchdowns. When the Gamecocks needed a big play, he was often the catalyst, making a name for himself as the primary Wildcat option as well.

What Cooper lacks in speed he makes up for with quickness and natural athleticism, elements the offense that should flex next season alongside ballcarriers Brandon Wilds and David Williams.

Cooper’s experience level should benefit his fellow receivers along with projected starting quarterback Connor Mitch the most as a reliable target who is often open and able to find soft spots in coverage. Matching the production of Shaq Roland, Damiere Byrd and Nick Jones is no easy feat, but Cooper’s number of targets will drastically increase leading to opportunities for others in 1-on-1 situations.

It’ll be interesting to see how Cooper, a playmaker each coordinator will try and eliminate on gamedays, responds to being in the crosshairs for opposing defenses. Relatively unknown before recording four 100-yard games including a record-setting performance against Tennessee last season, Cooper is no longer the Gamecocks’ best-kept secret.
