The Will Muschamp era is over in Gainesville. Enter Jim McElwain.

Coach Mac has plenty of work to do, but here are five specific areas where Florida needs to improve the most for next season.

1. The passing game: Do Florida fans even remember what a productive passing game looks like? Despite the physical ground game that Muschamp’s Florida teams showed at times, opposing defense were able to stop the Florida offense easily as a result of essentially zero threat in the passing game. You cannot beat good teams with a one-dimensional offense. Good news is that Jim McElwain is a great hire for improving this area of the game. McElwain will bring the biggest missing ingredient in recent years: quarterback development. It might not be Treon Harris, but we’ll see quality quarterback play eventually with McElwain at the helm.

2. Find a playmaker: We thought Demarcus Robinson was emerging as the go-to playmaker for the Florida offense, and he still may be the guy with a revamped offense, but his inconsistency was disappointing last year. Ultimately, it comes down to talent. Florida needs better talent on offense. If McElwain can bring in better talent, the lacking playmaking ability will be solved.

3. Need a pass rusher to replace Fowler: With Dante Fowler, Jr. heading to the NFL, somebody will need to step up for Florida in the pass rush department. Fowler led the team with 8.5 sacks this season while other guys like McAlister had 6.5 and Bryan Cox Jr helped with four of his own. The return of Jonathan Bullard for his senior season should be quite impactful. Look for Bullard to have a big year in 2015. Florida is also in the running for two of the top defensive ends in the country in CeCe Jefferson and Byron Cowart. Adding these young studs to the mix could be huge for helping McElwain to continue the Muschamp-like defenses at Florida in the years ahead.

4. Better safety play: Despite the talent at corner, Florida’s secondary got burned way too many times in 2014. Muschamp attributed many of the breakdowns due to communication problems, so communication must improve in the secondary. Geoff Collins may utilize Marcell Harris as a linebacker-safety hybrid to help improve the back end of the defense. Marcus Maye’s play in the Birmingham Bowl was also encouraging.

5. Get the attitude back: Florida football is beaten down despite being on top of college football just a few years ago.  McElwain needs some key wins to bring the swagger back to Gainesville. Fans shouldn’t expect massive results in year one, but fans should expect to see glimpses of the returning swagger. This can occur in a number of ways: recruiting wins over the next two weeks, recent news of the facilities upgrade and of course actual wins on the field in 2015. Specifically, Florida must regain its reputation as a team that can put a lot of points on the board. The Gators have missed on way too many in-state offensive prospects due to the reputation that Muschamp’s teams had on offense. If McElwain can regain it, Florida will begin to reign in as much talent as anybody in the country…and the wins will follow.
