Assessing Georgia’s 2015 class a week before signing day

Georgia’s 2015 class, a 25-member haul that is expected to increase on National Signing Day, came under fire Wednesday following four-star defensive back Shaquery Wilson’s decommitment and decision to choose West Virginia.

Wilson is Georgia’s sixth decommitment in this year’s class, but the Bulldogs have flipped five others and still remain in the 247Sports Top 10 team rankings despite falling two spots to No. 6 overall (and third in the SEC behind Alabama and Tennessee). One player Georgia can’t afford to lose in the next few days is five-star athlete Terry Godwin, one of the jewels of this cycle along with Trent Thompson, the nation’s top player.

Godwin is being courted by several other SEC programs including Auburn and Alabama. He has visited both schools this month, but remains strong on his Georgia commitment he made one year ago. Bulldogs assistants Brian Schottenheimer, Jeremy Pruitt and John Lilly have all had in-home visits with Godwin to convince him Athens is the place to be on signing day.

This year’s class is particularly pass rusher-heavy with early enrollees or commits listed as defensive ends.

The Bulldogs are in the lead for uncommitted four-star linebacker Roquan Smith, a player who could make an early impact on Pruitt’s defense. Securing the in-state 6-foot-2, 205-pounder from Montezuma along with Godwin would push Georgia back into the Top 5 for the 2015 cycle.

At this point however with several SEC rivals trying to pry others away, Bulldogs coaches are working diligently to make sure the 18 current commits — including six four-stars in addition to Thompson and Godwin — who haven’t yet enrolled, sign.
