Plenty of top-rated players don’t come close to making decisions until National Signing Day. (See: Jefferson, C.C. and Smith, Roquan.)

But there’s more early recruiting activity now than you may imagine, with ratings systems launching sooner and college coaches needing to show interest or fall behind on the best targets.

The unquestioned No. 1 recruit in the country for the 2017 recruiting class is a primary, if extreme, example of that (more below).

As SEC programs swarm full force on the top 2016 recruits, here’s a few sexy names from the ’17 group that already have the attention of programs in the conference.

1. Dylan Moses, OLB (Baton Rouge, La.)

With a 247Sports composite ranking of 1.000, Moses is the consensus No. 1 player of the 2017 recruiting class. At 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds and yet to play his junior season of high school, he already is wreaking havoc all over the field every game.

Famous because he received an offer from LSU (and subsequently Alabama) when he still was in middle school, Moses’ stature only has grown in recruiting circles since then.

Naturally, Moses holds offers from all the biggest schools in the country, including 11 in the SEC. Despite an unofficial visit with Alabama for an Iron Bowl, Moses committed to LSU in 2013. But a player of his talent will have to beat away continued interest from other schools with conviction.

2. Calvin Ashley, OT (Orlando, Fla.)

Auburn, Alabama, Florida and South Carolina are among the SEC schools hot and heavy for this gigantic offensive tackle. Already 6-foot-7 and 307 pounds — having just finished his sophomore year of high school, mind you — this five-star lineman will create quite a fuss whenever he announces his decision.

For now, it looks like everyone could be chasing Florida State for his services.

3. Deangelo Gibbs, CB (Suwanee, Ga.)

The hottest defensive back of the 2017 class, Gibbs already would fit on the Seattle Seahawks roster physically.

At 6-foot-2 and 204 pounds, might Gibbs outgrow the cornerback position?

Alabama, Auburn, Georgia and South Carolina are among the schools pursuing Gibbs, though UGA has shown the most interest thus far. Most recruiting insiders currently predict that Gibbs won’t leave the state.

4. Marvin Wilson, DT (Bellaire, Texas)

The country’s elite programs seemingly all want Wilson, the No. 1 defensive tackle prospect in the class.

The overriding opinion is that he’ll choose between Texas and Texas A&M, which is an increasingly tempestuous recruiting rivalry. Players like Wilson can swing momentum in the Lone Star State fast.

Missouri also wants Wilson, and the Tigers could be a wild card in this pursuit. Six SEC schools reportedly have offered the 6-foot-4, 300-pound lineman a scholarship.

5. Hunter Johnson, QB (Brownsburg, Ind.)

Johnson currently holds the distinction as the top quarterback prospect of the ’17 class by the slimmest of margins. It’s tough to pinpoint the direction Johnson is leaning at this point, as he seems open to considering schools from the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten and SEC.

The 6-foot-3, 197-pound quarterback has taken an unofficial visit to Tennessee, and the Vols — despite picking up three regarded quarterbacks in the ’15 class and a commitment from the touted Jarrett Guarantano in the ’16 class — would love to add a fifth impressive talent at the position for the post-Joshua Dobbs era.

Notre Dame and Penn State also appear to be high on Johnson’s early list.

6. Shawn Robinson, QB (Denton, Texas)

The five-star Texas quarterback du jour, Robinson is the top-rated dual-threat guy in the ’17 class and the 10th-rated player regardless of position.

Remember all those quarterbacks the University of Texas failed to secure under coach Mack Brown at the end of his tenure? Well, analysts don’t think Charlie Strong and the Longhorns will miss here.

But if Texas loses out on Robinson, it’ll be because of the usual suspects: Ohio State, Oklahoma, Michigan, home-state TCU — or Alabama.

That’s right, we could see coach Nick Saban go head-to-head with the school to which he was rumored to be interested in leaving Tuscaloosa following the 2013 season. It’s hard to foresee offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin remaining with the Tide until the 2017 season, but it’s also hard to foresee Alabama reverting back to a much more conservative offense after the team success last season. Robinson would be an interesting fit, like a much more gifted version of Blake Sims.

LSU, Ole Miss and Texas A&M also have offered Robinson.

7. Markail Benton, OLB (Phenix City, Ala.)

Outside of Moses, Benton is the premier linebacker target in this recruiting class.

Benton is almost certainly SEC-bound, with 10 of his 14 reported offers from schools inside the conference. Right now, Alabama and Auburn appear poised to keep Benton inside the state.

Perhaps considering Phenix City, Ala., is 35 miles East-Southeast of Auburn, the Tigers may have a built-in advantage. According to 247Sports, it likely will be up to defensive coordinator Kirby Smart and secondary coach Mel Tucker to pry him from the War Eagle clan by February 2017.

8. Najee Harris, RB (Antioch, Calif.)

Georgia, Tennessee, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt all have offered the 6-foot-2, 210-pound junior-to-be.

Currently, though, Harris is committed to the University of Alabama, making the decision after an unofficial visit in April. Some insiders predict UCLA has a chance to flip Harris, while Michigan, Notre Dame and USC should continue to test his resolve as well.

9. Tee Higgins, WR (Oak Ridge, Tenn.)

Higgins needs to add some weight to his lanky 6-foot-4 frame in the next two years. Otherwise he represents a high-profile name who could contribute to a major program early in his college career.

Tennessee would love to keep Higgins at home, as the receiver lives about a 30-minute drive from the Knoxville, Tenn., campus. The Vols appear on course to maintain a loaded offensive roster by 2017, and Higgins would be a welcome addition.

UT certainly wouldn’t want another SEC school to swoop into the shadow of Neyland Stadium to rob them of Higgins. But Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss, South Carolina and Texas A&M are interested.

10. Jeffrey Okudah, S (Grand Prairie, Texas)

His destination or leanings remain more of a mystery right now, at least publicly. But he did attend Texas A&M’s junior day and has gotten a visit from the Crimson Tide coaching staff.

One of two five-star safeties in this class (along with Lawrenceville, Ga., native Isaiah Pryor), the 6-foot-2, 200-pound Okudah currently holds offers from at least 30 power-conference programs.

Nine SEC schools will be among the throng vying for the top-rated safety of ’17.
