Hoping to jumpstart its lagging recruiting efforts, South Carolina moved its Gamecock Showcase camp from late July to mid-June, staging it Saturday on campus.

Those efforts paid off with an immediate commitment from 2017 tight end Will Register of Chapin, S.C.

At 6-foot-4 and 241 pounds, Register also holds an offer from Clemson and has gotten interest from Tennessee. He’s South Carolina’s first commitment of the 2017 class, and the Gamecocks only have four verbal pledges for 2016.

“You fight to get these guys on campus so much, recruiting coordinator Steve Spurrier Jr. said, according to The State newspaper. “Now you’re fighting to get them on campus earlier and earlier. You’re trying to get them on campus three, four or five times. You want to try and provide a different experience every time they come.”
