True freshman Kyler Murray has become a Texas quarterback legend before he ever participates in an Aggies practice.

The five-star Texas A&M signee earned the distinction of national prep athlete of the year Tuesday night, according to the Associated Press.

Murray threw for 4,713 yards and 54 touchdowns as a senior at Allen (Texas) High School, leading the team to a 16-0 record and a Class 6A state championship. He also played baseball and earned speculation he could become a first-round MLB draft choice before announcing he wouldn’t sign a pro contract.

Among those who presented Murray with the award: Houston Texans Pro Bowler J.J. Watt, Golden State forward Draymond Green and retired soccer star Landon Donovan.

“This is a big deal,” Murray said, according to the AP. “I hope to continue my success at the next level. This award means nothing if I don’t carry on the tradition in receiving it.”

The quarterback hopes to compete with Kyle Allen for a role on the 2015 team, but more than likely he’ll spend the season as a backup. His most important role may be trying to convince the nation’s No. 1 offensive tackle, Gregory Little, to come to Texas A&M.

Little recently decommitted from the Aggies and is taking a hard look at Alabama, Ole Miss, Ohio State and Auburn. Little and Murray were high school teammates, and have a chance to be paired together again in College Station, Texas.
