LSU’s quarterback competition is one of the publicized position battles in college football.

Quarterbacks Brandon Harris and Anthony Jennings are competing to get the keys to Cam Cameron’s offense this season, and there’s been no real news about the competition by Les Miles so far.

The Tigers held their first full squad and full pads practice of the preseason Monday, and Miles said the quarterbacks continue to play better during fall camp.

“It’s an ongoing process,” Miles said of the quarterback competition. “Both guys are playing better. They are night and day in how they continue to evolve as compared to this time last year. We will have better quarterback play.”

However, it sounds like Miles isn’t even close to making a decision on who the starter will be.

“The quarterback race is just what it is,” Miles said. “It will take some time, but it’s imperative that they continue to improve. I think the intent is to make sure the level of quarterback play continues to rise. I think as a group it appears to me they have that intent.

“I’m not that guy who is going to make an early decision (on naming a starter) certainly. I think both guys made progress today.”

Competition breeds success, and Miles and Cameron want their quarterbacks competing and making each other better.

Miles admitted that Harris took the greater portion of snaps with the first-team offense, but he added that Jennings continues taking reps with the first team, too.

“Brandon took first snaps but Anthony took a good portion of them,” he said. “He’s (Jennings) competing. He made a couple of nice plays today. He’s competing very well. (He had) no arm soreness that I saw or heard of.”

The coming scrimmages will be telling for Miles and his coaching staff, and whichever quarterback has the hot hand heading into opening day just may get the nod.
