A member of Washington’s 2013 recruiting class as a four-star wide receiver from the talent-riddled state of California, hype and expectations are nothing new to now Ole Miss sophomore Damore’ea Stringfellow.

After playing in 12 of 13 games as a true freshman as catching 20 passes for the Huskies, Stringfellow’s potential was evident.

But an off-the-field altercation after his freshman season that led to misdemeanor charges against Stringfellow resulted in the wideout deciding it was time for a change of scenery, and a transfer to Ole Miss in June 2014 ensued.

Due to NCAA transfer rules, Stringfellow had to sit out the Rebels 2014 season. But from the reports that are coming out of Oxford during fall camp, it appears the talented pass-catcher was worth the wait.

Stringfellow began to excite Rebels coaches and fans during the Grove Bowl this year when he finished the spring scrimmage with 3 catches for 98 yards, including a 66-yard touchdown.

Even with that standout performance, Rebels coach Hugh Freeze spent most of the spring and summer being critical of Stringfellow and demanding more from the 6-foot-3, 230-pound wide receiver.

But that was only because Freeze saw Stringfellow’s immense capability as a big, physical playmaker whose size and skill are comparable to those of the Rebels star wideout Laquon Treadwell.

“When I (challenge a player like Stringfellow) it’s because the expectations should be more because you’re gifted. What kind of… coach would I be to not challenge you on issues on things that would keep you from being your best?” Freeze said, according to the Clarion-Ledger.

“It’s not in a demeaning way. It’s look, I want you to achieve everything you can and I think there’s more. Here’s why I think you’re not there.”

And now in fall camp, Stringfellow is beginning to reach his high ceiling as a receiver by continuously beating 1-on-1 coverage in practice while showing his blazing speed and sure hands.

Stringfellow is in the midst of a close battle between three players for the two remaining wide receiver spots alongside Treadwell in the Ole Miss starting lineup. He’s facing some steep upperclassmen competition in junior Quincy Adeboyejo and senior Cody Core, who combined for 67 receptions for the Rebels last season.

But all three of those receivers are sure to have a big role in the Rebels offense this season and having that many pass catchers that opposing defenses need to be mindful of can be lethal.

And if Stringfellow lives up to the lofty expectations, Ole Miss could end up having an elite wide receiver corps in 2015.

Throw in left tackle Laremy Tunsil and tight end Evan Engram, and whomever Freeze has in mind to start at quarterback should be a lucky player.
