The pro-style quarterback is a unique player to recruit for college football coaches.

Given the prevalence of the spread and zone-read offenses, some coaches will discard the conventional drop-back passer from their recruiting boards. Pro-style skill sets do not gel will what some teams ask of their quarterback.

Conversely, there are some coaches that will take a dual-threat quarterback and mold him into a pro-style offense, looking to take advantage of his ability to elude pressure in the pocket. Teams like LSU, Tennessee and Alabama have highly-rated dual-threat quarterbacks verbally committed for the 2016 class.

It takes just the right coach, with the vision of a pass-first quarterback leading his offense, to become the right match for a pro-style quarterback recruit these days.

Here five of the best pro-style quarterbacks with verbal commitments to sign with SEC schools for the 2016 recruiting cycle:

1. Shea Patterson (Bradenton, Fla.) — Ole Miss commit

  • The skinny: This one is a borderline selection. Widely considered the top quarterback in the 2016 recruiting class, Patterson is labeled as a pro-style quarterback by 247Sports and a dual-threat by Rivals. Which he favors most in college remains to be seen, but what we do know is that Hugh Freeze has landed a commitment from the guy who is considered the very best of the bunch. He is a top 5 player in the country, regardless of position, according to 247Sports, Rivals and Scout.

2. Jacob Eason (Lake Stevens, Wash.) — Georgia commit

  • The skinny: Another five-star commitment at quarterback for the SEC, Eason easily could hold the No. 1 spot on this list. Considered the No. 4 prospect in the country by Rivals and No. 6 by 247Sports, Eason has an offer from pretty much everyone. Georgia will be getting one of the premier passers in the country if the Bulldogs are able to get the pen to the paper in February. Check out the arm strength on this kid in the video above.

3. Deuce Wallace (Sevierville, Tenn.) – Vanderbilt commit

  • The skinny: While closer to the sixth- or seventh-best SEC quarterback commitment in this recruiting class, Wallace ranks (a distant) third on this list of pro-style QBs. Ranked as high as 10th in the pro-style quarterback rankings by Rivals, Wallace decommitted from Northwestern in April to pursue the chance to settle some of the unrest surrounding the Vanderbilt quarterback position in recent years.

4. Cole Kelley (Lafayette, La.) — Arkansas commit

  • The skinny: At 6-foot-7, Kelley is sure to remind Arkansas fans of Ryan Mallett once he throws a helmet on, but whether he’ll be able to live up to Mallett’s abilities on the field is still yet to be determined.

5. Gunnar Hoak (Dublin, Ohio) — Kentucky commit

  • The skinny: The Wildcats did not take a quarterback in the 2015 recruiting cycle, making this an ideal destination for a ’16 class quarterback looking for playing time. Hoak has the measurables (6-foot-4, 190-pounds) and looks good on film, so perhaps the three-star recruit is a little underrated at this point.
