Demetris Robinson, the nation’s consensus No. 1 athlete in the 2016 recruiting class, decommitted from the University of Alabama on Friday night.

At 6-foot-1 and 170 pounds, Robinson likely will play receiver in college. Alabama still retains a verbal commitment from three-star receiver T.J. Simmons.

Meanwhile, the No. 4 overall prospect from the state of Georgia (Savannah Christian Prep), who committed to Alabama last summer, now will look elsewhere.

The Bulldogs, the SEC team in Robertson’s home state, have shown increased interest in him. Assistant Mike Ekeler traveled to his high school earlier this week “to observe Robertson on the first day of the NCAA’s spring evaluation period,” the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Stanford also has shown increased interest in Robertson, AL.com reported, while Auburn, Clemson and Florida are among other schools who have pursued him.

The Crimson Tide never lack for incoming talent, but no school wants to lose a player rated as highly as Robertson, especially when an SEC rival could scoop him up.
