Alabama has had a rather quiet 2022 NFL Draft thus far.

As things stand right now in the 5th round, Alabama has seen 7 players drafted from the 2021 team. Evan Neal was the highest drafted Alabama player at No. 7 overall to the New York Giants, while Jameson Williams was also a first-round pick at No. 12 overall to the Detroit Lions.

However, Phidarian Mathis became Alabama’s record breaking pick in the second round, according to the Tuscaloosa News. Following Mathis’ selection, the 2017 Alabama football team broke the record for the most draft picks off of one team. Mathis became the 39th player from that roster get drafted. That officially beat 2001 Miami for the record.

So, while Georgia has completely stolen all the headlines this year — and rightfully so, Alabama quietly set the record for the most players drafted off of one roster. The 2017 Alabama team won the national title 26-23 in overtime against Georgia.

Players who were also drafted from the 2017 team include Jalen Hurts, Calvin Ridley, Jerry Jeudy, Quinnen Williams, Mac Jones, Najee Harris, DeVonta Smith and Tua Tagovailoa, among others.

Alabama later pushed the record to 40 players after running back Brian Robinson, Jr. was picked by the Washington Commanders. Robinson was a freshmen during the 2017 season.
