Former Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster’s comeback will reportedly have to wait another year. Multiple outlets are reporting that Washington will place Foster on injured reserve, effectively ending his 2020 season.

Foster hasn’t played in an NFL game since October of 2018. In August, it looked like he might return to the field this season when Washington activated him off the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, but it appears Foster isn’t quite ready to go.

“Watching him on the field it was obvious the knee wasn’t fully healthy,” Washington insider JP Finlay of NBC Sports wrote Saturday. “Foster’s best traits on the football field were explosion and athleticism, and the burst just wasn’t there.”

Foster’s NFL career began with a promising rookie season in San Francisco in 2017. He has missed significant time since the 2018 season, however.

In November 2018, the 49ers waived Foster after he was arrested on a domestic violence charge in Tampa. Washington picked up Foster on waivers. The former Crimson Tide standout spent the remainder of the 2018 season on the commissioner’s exempt list while the NFL looked into the incident. The charge was dismissed in January 2019 by the State Attorney’s Office in Florida.

In 2019 preseason camp, Foster tore his ACL. Since joining the NFL in 2017, Foster has played in 16 games, recording 101 total tackles.

Foster’s next NFL opportunity may come with a new team as his Washington contract expires at the end of the year.
