Danny Kanell and Brady Quinn had differing opinions on Florida State’s College Football Playoff snub on Tuesday’s edition of CBS Sports HQ.

Kanell blamed the system and how it’s setup to leave out a Power 5 champion each year.

“Florida State got screwed. That’s just basically the only way that you can look at it,” said Kanell. “They did everything that they were supposed to do, but I think college football got screwed the most. This system is setup so that a Power 5 champion is going to get left out every year.”

Kanell explained that there have been examples where a division winner has made it instead. However, he believes the system has been flawed from Day 1.

“We’ve had examples where a division winner would backdoor their way in. Ohio State did it, Alabama did it and some years it worked out great,” said Kanell. “They take advantage of that opportunity and win the national championship, and everyone says, ‘See? The committee got it right.’ It’s been wrong from Day 1 and unfortunately in the last year of this 4-team Playoff, Florida State got the shaft.”

Quinn said he felt bad for Florida State because the Seminoles were sold the lie that an undefeated season grants you a berth in the playoff.

“I feel bad for Florida State. They were sold the idea that an undefeated season in a Power 5 conference would lead to a berth in the College Football Playoff,” he said. “They haven’t been paying attention to not only the history of the Playoff, but the history of college football in general.”

He argued that the Seminoles haven’t been paying attention to the history of the Playoff and college football, listing off Kanell’s 1993 Florida State national championship team.

The Seminoles jumped an undefeated West Virginia team in the polls and beat Nebraska in the national championship.

“What were you guys going into the final week? 11-1. You actually skipped over an undefeated West Virginia team to go play Nebraska, which you guys won. This has always been a part of the history of college football. When we expanded to a 4-team playoff, it was never gonna be equitable.”

Regardless of who’s side you’re on, Florida State faces Georgia in the Orange Bowl on Dec. 30.
