Darius Miles, a former reserve forward for the Alabama basketball team who is charged with capital murder in the Jan. 15 shooting death of 23-year-old Jamea Harris, was denied bond on Wednesday.

Carol Robinson of AL.com reported that Tuscaloosa County Circuit Judge Daniel Pruet told Miles, who cried following the ruling, that there were a lot of factors in his favor of the bond issue – more than are usually present with capital murder defendants – and said the bond issue will be revisited at a later date.

Miles’ family and friends gathered to support him, including Alabama players Jahvon Quinerly, who is said to be a close friend of Miles, his brother, walk-on Jaden Quinerly, and forward Noah Gurley.

Pruet mentioned that bond could re-addressed “at a different opportunity for more information.”

Testimony was not taken, as the defense and the state each made oral arguments. Mary Turner, Miles’ attorney, gave an extensive PowerPoint presentation with quotes from people across Miles’ life discussing his character and his impact on them. The slideshow also included photos of Miles and family, former teammates and more.

Turner described him as family oriented, God fearing and respectful.

“This is a man entitled to a bond,” Turner said. “He would not be the only (suspect) who has ever gotten a bond on this charge.”
