Understandably, David Pollack didn’t want to answer the question.

In an appearance on ESPN, the college football analyst was asked if Alabama or Clemson was more likely to miss the College Football Playoff. When told “neither” wasn’t an option, Pollack gave a surprising answer.

“I would say Alabama,” Pollack said, as you can see in a YouTube video shared by Football Nation. “And I know that sounds crazy because we’ve talked about how they’re the best team on the planet.”

Pollack had some sound reasons for his choice, chief among them that injuries appear to be piling up for the No. 1 Crimson Tide. He specifically pointed to quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s recurring knee issues and backup Jalen Hurts’ recent ankle surgery.

Alabama’s road to the Playoff is also much tougher than No. 2 Clemson’s, as Pollack noted. The Crimson Tide returns from this week’s bye at No. 4 LSU and could ultimately face a top-10 SEC East champion for the conference title, while the Tigers don’t have a ranked team on its remaining schedule.

Even with all that said, Pollack still made it clear he believes both teams will make it to the Playoff, which they’ve done for the last three years.
