Former Alabama running back Derrick Henry will honor the late Altee Tenpenny by wearing No. 22 for the Tennessee Titans during his rookie season. According to Henry, Tenpenny told him he planned to wear the number if he ever made it to the NFL while the two were teammates at Alabama.

“Altee told me one day at practice back at Bama if he ever made it to the NFL he would wear 22,” Henry said via Instagram on Friday afternoon. “So I will make sure that dream lives on.”

Tenpenny enrolled at Alabama in 2013 — the same year as Henry — and spent two seasons with the Tide before transferring to UNLV and then Nicholls State. His life was cut short during a one-car crash in Mississippi last October.

Henry rushed for 216 yards and three touchdowns on 24 attempts during his first NFL preseason. He previously wore No. 2, but waited to announce his actual number after roster cuts Friday. NFL running backs must only wear numbers 20-49.
