After his sensational first-half in the national championship game, the one thing to remember about Alabama WR DeVonta Smith against Ohio State was his broken finger.

Smith had 215 yards and three touchdowns in the first half, but suffered the injury in the third quarter. His stat line finished there as he had 12 catches.

“What stood out to me the most is that if I caught the ball I would’ve never been in that situation,” Smith recently told PFT PM, per Pro Football Talk. “That’s what I think about the most is just if I would have caught that pass, my finger wouldn’t be like this.”

Smith expects a full recovery from the injury.

“Honestly it wasn’t painful until we went to the tent and they started pulling on it,” Smith said. “When it happened, it didn’t really hurt. I just looked at it and it just looked weird. I was like, ‘Okay, let me go in here and see what they gotta say about it.’”

That was the end of a storied career where he considered the NFL, but then returned to Alabama for another season where he won the Heisman Trophy, was a two-time national champion, a unanimous All-American and the SEC Offensive Player of the Year in 2020.
