Most schools are lucky if they have just one Heisman winner in program history.

However, Alabama has had 3 from 2009 to 2020 with Mark Ingram II, Derrick Henry, and Devonta Smith all taking home the award.

Smith joined ‘Truss Levels with Cam Jordan and Mark Ingram” to talk about what it was like when he won the Heisman, and how he almost didn’t come back for his senior year.

Smith seriously thought about going to the NFL a year prior. It was actually one of Smith’s mentors that convinced him that he needed to comeback for his senior year to win the Heisman trophy.

“What was so crazy was, my mentor was like if you don’t come back to win the Heisman don’t go,” said Smith. “I was just like whatever man, I’m not gonna win no Heisman. Then like, it happened.”

Smith was stunned when he heard his name called during the Heisman ceremony.

“That Florida game, Najee was stupid,” said Smith. “Mac threw for like four something. I was just sitting there and I was like, ok Mac’s gonna win. So they called my name, and I just froze. I was like man I really just won the Heisman. It’s just some things you never think about can happen.”
