Stocking the fire of discussion that revolves around the Alabama quarterback situation, two ESPN writers may have just pinned targets on themselves for the Alabama fan base.

In a college football roundtable platform, Andrea Adelson and Chris Low each pegged Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa as “overhyped” in a listing of the top 50 players in college football. Neither figured the quarterback, who rescued the Crimson Tide in the second half of the national championship, was a top-11 player in college football this season.

Interestingly, both offered a caveat about Tagovailoa’s potential. But that seems to be the crux of the argument between Jalen Hurts and Tagovailoa, and the decision for the coaching staff. What wins out between experience and potential? And candidly, since Alabama is already expected to be favored in every game this season, how many games would a change in quarterback make a difference?

Adelson wrote: “But there are two problems I have with listing Tagovailoa so high in the preseason. First, we have a limited body of work to go on. Yes, it is true that body of work includes an exceptional performance off the bench against Georgia in the national championship game, along with his beautiful, game-winning touchdown throw.”

Added Low: “In the words of Clemson coach Dabo Swinney, one moment doesn’t make a season. Or one unforgettable touchdown pass, for that matter. Yes, Tagovailoa was the spark for Alabama in the second half of the national championship game last season and has elite arm talent. But he still has to win the starting job and prove he can be the guy over the course of the entire season, and it’s not like Jalen Hurts is just going to go quietly into the night.”
