The name Tyrone Prothro resonates with nearly every SEC football fan.

He’s certainly remembered for making what could be the best catch of all-time, but he’s unfortunately remembered for suffering arguably the most devastating and gruesome injury of all-time.

AL.com caught up with the former Alabama pass catcher after he joined 6A powerhouse Spanish Fort’s coaching staff. He’ll be working with the varsity football program (wide receivers) in addition to the JV basketball program.

Although he’s always wanted to be a coach, he’s held multiple jobs over the last several years that weren’t in coaching. He did receive an opportunity to coach with the Carolina Panthers as an intern with Mike Shula. Prothro always wanted to return to coach at his alma mater but never received the opportunity. He just couldn’t wait any longer.

“I’ve had some coaching opportunities I passed up along the way,” he told AL.com. “I always wanted to go back to my alma mater, but I understand there is a long list of guys who want to work under coach (Nick) Saban and get that knowledge from all the experience he has. A position just never worked out there, and I didn’t want to keep passing up other opportunities.”

High school players would jump at the opportunity to be coached by Prothro, as he recorded 863 receiving yards, five touchdowns and 58 receptions in 26 games during his three-year career at Alabama.

Oh, and after 12 surgeries, he’s also happy to report that his leg is ‘fine now.’

“My leg is fine now,” he said. “I can run. I can be active. I can cut on it. I just can’t cut real hard on it. Other than that, it’s fine. I can do what I need to do and be active.”
