Heisman Trophy winners in the College Football Playoff era have been a mixed bag when it comes to the finals and semifinals.

Last year’s winner Joe Burrow managed to win the National Championship after taking home the stiff-arm trophy. Derrick Henry helped Alabama to a title as well in 2015 after winning the Heisman, but Marcus Mariota (Oregon, 2014), Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma, 2017) and Kyler Murray (Oklahoma, 2018) came up short in the postseason.

In the BCS era, USC quarterback Matt Leinart won the Heisman Trophy ahead of the Trojans’ 2004 title. Leinart recently weighed in recently on how Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith will fare facing the “Heisman pressure” of going for a national title.

“This is just a different year. DeVonta just won it this week, and now he’s got a chance to play the national championship game less than a week later,” Leinart noted.

“I think you guys would agree, but just watching the humility of this young man, where he came from, the family, all that stuff…this kid just embodies everything you want in what a Heisman winner should be, what a college football player should be, what a young man should be,” Leinart added. “Judging by his personality and his humility, this will not affect him. He’s going to be a problem for Ohio State’s defense.”

Alabama fans are certainly Leinart being right on this prediction. The full FS1 segment can be viewed below.
