Greg McElroy and Cole Cubelic joined college football fans and media to react to the news that Nick Saban would join ESPN’s “College GameDay.”

Cubelic initially said he’s heard mixed reviews, but he calls Saban’s move a “home run” because Saban will offer great insight into the scheme, a lot of the personnel, recruiting, the state of college football and has an underrated sense of humor.

“I’ve given a few examples of some of our exchanges, you have as well, the personality, I think once it really begins to come out and he gets extremely comfortable, it’s going to be fun for a lot of people to see,” Cubelic said on “McElroy and Cubelic In the morning” on WJOX. “It’s a massive get for College GameDay, and I think it’ll end up being a natural fit.”

McElroy said he doesn’t understand the downside, and if a fan is against Saban because of what he did to your team, fine,  but “Tell me someone who’s better equipped to provide insight into how a game might go, or how a game might be determined. Or the nuance to preparing for a game that might be, I don’t know, an FCS team in Week 11. I think there’s nobody with better insight.”

The co-hosts also debated whether Saban would be critical of coaches, and what that means to the average fan about a given play, or game plan.

McElroy added that Urban Meyer has been good on FOX’s “Big Noon Kickoff” and Saban has accomplished plenty more than Meyer. Saban is also universally respected, and if a fan likes him or not is totally different.

McElroy pointed out that the other aspect of the move is if Saban will like the job, because there are aspects of television that are inefficient, and that doesn’t fit well with his personality.

There’s plenty of personality already on the set, McElroy said, but there’s a need for Xs and Os breakdown, and that’s what Saban can fill in. McElroy pointed out that there’s not a defensive player on the set, as GameDay has a quarterback, a punter, a kick returner and a coach.

“I like learning, I know not everybody does, people like fun, people like entertainment, I’m all for all of that as well, but I also like to learn,” McElroy said. “And Coach Saban sees it differently from a defensive side, from a defensive perspective, I think he’s going to be able to provide great intrigue.”
