Greg McElroy has a prediction for who will ultimately win Alabama’s starting quarterback job.

McElroy is going with Ty Simpson, the former 5-star prospect who is entering his redshirt freshman season with the Crimson Tide.

Simpson is competing with Notre Dame transfer Tyler Buchner and Jalen Milroe, who was Alabama’s primary backup quarterback last season. McElroy identified serious flaws with Buchner and Milroe’s case for the starting job.

According to McElroy, Milroe’s turnover issues (5 last season) and Buchner’s late arrival (he transferred to Alabama this offseason) are both major issues.

“So I think when I look at those 2 aspects and a guy like Ty Simpson, it’s not like he was a guy that was under-recruited or is an under-achieving guy,” McElroy said in an interview with On3’s J.D Pickell this week. “He just hasn’t had the opportunity yet. And I think with where the offense is going, it’s going to be a premium on decision-making.

“A premium on distributing the football accurately from the pocket off play action … That’s where I think the offense is going and I think [Simpson] at this point is best-suited to be able to run that at the highest-possible level.”

On Wednesday, head coach Nick Saban said no quarterback is separated themselves from the competition so far this summer.

McElroy said he expects Alabama to hold a “derby” in Week 1, with potentially all 3 contenders getting playing time against Middle Tennessee. But he believes Alabama will name a full-time starter ahead of its meeting with Texas in Week 2.
