Greg McElroy knows a thing or two about SEC football after playing quarterback for Nick Saban. He’s now a part of ESPN’s coverage of college football, and he recently took a trip down memory lane.

During a conversation with Connor O’Gara for the SDS Podcast, McElroy reflected on the 2010 Iron Bowl. That Iron Bowl pitted McElroy against eventual Heisman winner Cam Newton and national champion Auburn. However, it was McElroy’s Crimson Tide team that raced out to a big lead in the game.

Behind a pair of early touchdowns from McElroy, Alabama raced out to a 24-0 lead with 8:01 left in the 2nd quarter. Unfortunately, Newton and the Tigers woke up, erasing that deficit while going on to a 28-27 win.

During the interview with O’Gara, McElroy admitted getting over that loss with the way everything played out took about a decade:

“I’m kind of over it now. It took me probably 10 years though. If I’m going to be completely honest, like it took me 10 years to not be bothered by how that game ultimately went,” said McElroy. “Maybe not quite that long but it was a while. And it’s still painful, but there’s nothing that can be done about it now.”

When it was all said and done, McElroy finished the Iron Bowl with 377 yards passing and a pair of touchdowns while Julio Jones finished the game with 199 yards receiving and a touchdown. Unfortunately, the Crimson Tide rushed for just 69 yards in the game with Newton accounting for all 4 Auburn touchdowns.

At the end of the day, McElroy did help bring the 2009 national championship to Alabama, but the 2010 Iron Bowl will always be one that haunts him.
