He was the SEC Player of the Year and SEC Defensive Player of the Year. He was a Summer League standout. And now, Herbert Jones officially has an NBA contract.

On Monday, the New Orleans Pelicans announced that they’ve signed Jones to his first deal after he impressed during his 4 games in the NBA Summer League. The former Alabama standout was selected by the Pelicans with the No. 35 overall pick in the second round in the 2021 NBA Draft.

New Orleans didn’t announce the terms of the deal. However, Cecil Hurt of the Tuscaloosa News reported that Jones signed for 3 years and approximately $5.4 million, with the third year being a team option held by the Pelicans.

In 4 Summer League contests, Jones averaged 7.8 points and 3.8 rebounds while playing 21.7 minutes per game. Now, he’ll look to carry over that success into his first professional season.

“Herb is unbelievable,” Pelicans head coach Willie Green recently said, per AL.com’s Mark Inabinett. “His instincts, his knack, his ability to play multiple positions. It’s really fun to watch these guys play — just high-talented guys. Herb defensively is all over the place. I think he’s really going to help us on that end of the court.”

Jones spent four years at Alabama, but he broke out during his senior season in 2020-21. The forward averaged 11.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 1.1 blocks in 33 games, leading the Crimson Tide to a 26-7 season.
