Kalen DeBoer’s tenure got off to a rocky start at Alabama, an understandable beginning to any coach trying to replace Nick Saban. Fortunately, DeBoer has made some moves that indicate he has stopped the bleeding in Tuscaloosa.

That’s the perception Joel Klatt has of the Crimson Tide following the re-commitment of 5-star receiver Ryan Williams. Hopefully, it’s a sign that the chaos is slowing down at Alabama.

“Alabama seems to have stopped the bleeding. It wasn’t pretty. It was pretty chaotic after Nick Saban retired, and that’s what you find now is that it’s going to be chaotic for any team that decides to change their coach,” said Klatt. “And yet, they seem to have circled the wagons if you will and calmed it down.”

While Klatt refrained from labeling the Crimson Tide as “in a spiral,” he did admit it has been an eye-opening few weeks after the roster turnover at Alabama. Now, DeBoer and his staff can catch their breath a bit but the challenges of the offseason are far from done.

“I don’t want to say they were in a spiral but there was a bit of panic, right? It was a bit of eye-opening around the country and maybe even Bama fans that were like ‘Oh man, this can even happen to us’,” explained Klatt. “…Now the bleeding has stopped and Kalen DeBoer can take a bit of a deep breath.”

The next “huge test” that awaits is the spring period. Klatt pointed out DeBoer must show those players who stayed he is authentic while painting his picture for the Tide moving forward. If not, the spring transfer portal awaits players looking to examine their options once again.

“Kalen DeBoer is not out of the woods yet… This spring is going to be a huge test for DeBoer and Alabama. Are they buying what he’s selling? Is he authentic? … We’re going to find out at all these places because there’s a spring transfer portal period,” Klatt said.
