If Clemson is able to pull an upset against Alabama in the national championship, the Tigers will likely need a big game from freshman QB Trevor Lawrence.

Lawrence was 27-for-39 passing for 327 yards and three touchdowns in Clemson’s 30-3 win over Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff semifinals.

ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit explained why Lawrence can deliver a big game, and what the Alabama coaching staff is preparing for Lawrence.

“I don’t think the big stage is going to make (Lawrence) up tight or nervous,” Herbstreit said, according to 247Sports. “He plays with unprecedented poise. The big thing will be the way Tosh Lupoi and Nick Saban create ways to disguise pressures. They do a very good job of showing one thing pre-snap and then going to another. If there’s one area you’ll see Dabo Swinney and his offensive staff come up with a plan, it’ll be to make sure those late blitzes don’t affect him.”

While Swinney dismisses the notion that the quarterback change from Kelly Bryant to Lawrence had Alabama in mind, Herbstreit sees it a different way.

“You’ve got to be able to avoid costing yourself the game by turning over the football. Trevor Lawrence was inserted for Alabama,” he said. “I think (Clemson) was envisioning going up against this Alabama team with Trevor Lawrence’s ability to stretch the field. This is the matchup we’ve been waiting for and we’re excited about it.”

Lawrence has thrown just four interceptions this season, and not thrown one since the Boston College game four games ago.
