Nate Oats intends to remain as Alabama’s head coach for the 2024-25 season, he announced on Monday night.

Oats shared a statement with Alabama fans saying he is staying in Tuscaloosa despite being linked to the Kentucky head coaching vacancy. The Wildcats’ job is expected to officially open on Tuesday with longtime coach John Calipari reportedly closing in on a deal with Arkansas.

Oats, who led Alabama to its first-ever Final Four this season, has been widely mentioned as a potential candidate for the UK job. Instead, he will be staying in Tuscaloosa to continue building Alabama’s men’s basketball program into a national power.

Here’s Oats’ statement:

“I am fully committed to this team and to this University. We have already accomplished some great things here, and there is nothing I want more than for The University of Alabama to win its first national championship in men’s basketball. Despite any rumors to the contrary, rest assured that I will continue that pursuit as your head coach.”

Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne also released a statement saying the athletic department is “committed” to supporting Oats and his staff in pursuit of bringing a men’s basketball national championship to Tuscaloosa.

That’s massive news for Alabama, as Oats’ leadership has ushered the Tide’s men’s basketball program to its’ best ever stretch. Alabama has been a top-4 seed in the NCAA Tournament 7 times in its history, with 3 of those instances coming in the last 4 years under Oats.

Oats has established himself as one of the sport’s forward-thinkers when it comes to optimizing offensive basketball. According to KenPom, Alabama had the nation’s No. 2 most-efficient offense this season despite not having any high-level 2024 NBA Draft prospects on the roster.

For Kentucky, the Wildcats are still expected to have a deep pool of candidates to evaluate for their head coaching job. Baylor’s Scott Drew and Iowa State’s TJ Otzelberger are amongst the coaches who have been mentioned as possible candidates for the role.

Arkansas is expected to officially announce Calipari’s arrival on Tuesday.
