Alabama head coach Nick Saban released a statement on the transfer of redshirt freshman QB Blake Barnett, and Saban confirmed that he is leaving the program.

The school sent out the following release:

“We received word this afternoon that Blake Barnett has officially withdrawn from school and is no longer with our program. The quarterback position is a very unique position where only one player can play. We are very disappointed any time a player leaves the program who feels he can compete for a starting position elsewhere, rather than here at Alabama. We wish Blake the very best of luck in the future.”

Barnett started the first game of the season against USC, but since then, freshman Jalen Hurts has taken the reins of the offense.

In limited action, Barnett completed 11 of 19 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns this season.

Barnett’s transfer in the middle of the season is likely trying to exploit a little-known NCAA rule, and you can read more about that here.
