One of the key matchups in Monday’s national championship is between Shaun Wade of Ohio State and Alabama Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith.

Both players were asked about the matchup in recent days at press conferences to preview the game in Miami. Wade took an alpha approach about the possibility.

“You already know who I want to go up against at the end of the day,” Wade said. “But at the end of the day we’re just focused on this win and the way of getting the win. At the end of the day, what Coach Coombs says every day is we’ve got to win by one point to get the National Championship. That’s the obstacle. At the end of the day we’ve got to put the best on the best and just go from there, play different things, and just go from there.”

He later confirmed he was referring to Smith.

Smith was more measured in his response about Wade.

“I’m just looking forward to my last game,” Smith said. “I’m only guaranteed this last one, so I’m looking forward to getting to play against him.”

Smith also shared what he has seen from Wade in preparation.

“He’s very crafty,” Smith said. “He mixes his technique up some and just everything he does. He’s a technician with everything he does, and he’s a great player.”
