Any thought of Alabama QB Jalen Hurts redshirting this season at least moved to the back burner as the newly named backup quarterback was inserted into the game in the first quarter Saturday against Arkansas State.

Hurts has four games to play before a redshirt decision would come in to play. That leaves him with two games remaining this season. And any decision would come down to starting QB Tua Tagovailoa remaining healthy for the balance of the season. Hurts began 2-for-2 passing for 34 yards, but also fumbled near the goal line on second and goal from the four yard line.

Hurts’ future has been one of the most discussed topics around college football after coach Nick Saban declined to name a starter before Alabama thumped Louisville last week. Then Tagovailoa had a big game and was named the starter this week early in the week. SEC Network analyst Tim Tebow suggested on Friday on “The Paul Finebaum Show” that Hurts could transfer to Auburn.

The quarterback changes have been a source of heavy debate across college football since Tagovailoa rescued Alabama in the second half of the national championship.
