Alabama LB Shaun Dion Hamilton suffered a scary-looking knee injury during Saturday night’s win over LSU.

It was reported on Saturday night after the game that he’d likely miss the rest of the season, but now the extent of his injury is known.

According to 247Sports, Hamilton suffered a broken patella (kneecap) on the play. Because he’s a senior, Hamilton’s Alabama career is effectively over.

That’s a huge blow to the Alabama defense, and sad news for Hamilton, who also tore the ACL in the same knee during last year’s SEC Championship Game. Other players, including fellow LB Rashaan Evans, are taking the news of Hamilton’s injury hard:

“Shaun Dion’s just been a valuable player to our team, and the fact that he went down is just a blow to us,” linebacker Rashaan Evans said. “Really all we can do now is just continue to coach up these younger guys to fill in for him. But when Shaun Dion went down, he’s one of my dear friends, just the fact that it ended up like it did, it’s just a blow to our whole team.”

LB Mack Wilson also broke his foot during the game, so now Alabama’s linebacking corps is once again very thin. Wilson responded with a classy message to his teammate on Twitter:

Hamilton had a great career at Alabama, and it’s sad to see it come to an end like this. Hopefully he gets a chance in the NFL when his knee is healthy once again.
