Another coach with ties to the Houston Texans is reportedly heading to Alabama.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, former Texans tight ends coach Will Lawing is joining the Crimson Tide’s staff as an analyst. Lawing has served on Houston’s staff since 2014, which was the same year that Bill O’Brien took over as the Texans’ head coach. O’Brien was recently hired to be Alabama’s offensive coordinator.

Lawing had been Houston’s tight ends coach since 2019. Before that, he had stints as the Texans’ defensive quality control coach (2014-16) and offensive assistant (2017-18). He previously served as a graduate assistant under O’Brien at Penn State in 2013.

The 35-year-old Lawing played football at North Carolina from 2004-07, then began his coaching career by serving as an assistant at Juniata College from 2009-12.

It had previously been expected that Lawing was going to stay with the Texans, despite O’Brien’s firing that took place last October. On Jan. 30, Lawing was retained by new Houston head coach David Culley.

Lawing won’t be the first member of his family to serve under Alabama head coach Nick Saban. Lawing’s father, Brad, was an assistant at Michigan State from 1999-2002, the first of those seasons coming while Saban was still the Spartans’ head coach.
