Media reacts to bombshell reports of Alabama OC Steve Sarkisian likely becoming Texas head coach
The new year is off to a wild start in the college football world. Texas stunned everyone with the announcement of Tom Herman’s dismissal. As that news was breaking, it was reported that Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian is expected to be named the new head coach of the Longhorns.
The back-to-back bombshells have already generated instant reaction from college football media members on Twitter.
Here’s a small sample of what’s being said:
Paying $24 million to fire your coaches so you can hire a guy who flamed out tragically in the most comparable job to your own in terms of money, resources, pressure, and insane booster culture. TEXAS IS BACK.

Wow pretty crazy that they already had someone lined up before they fired their head coach. https://t.co/xbqhsJapEd

Alright drive the brinks truck to Sark’s house NOW! Don’t want to hear any of these Texas rumors.

Just great. We've got the best recruiters in the state of Texas. Which one(s) will Sark take with him?

Nick Saban needs a new OC?
I dare him. pic.twitter.com/WtU4rj4sOB

At least the Texas board of regents creates a health environment for Sark to work in

So… are Tom Herman and Sark just going to do a job swap or…

Holy good lord. I log off of Twitter for five minutes and Tom Herman is out and Steve Sarkisian is in at Texas. MERCY!
So am I to assume all those reports of Terri Saban looking for real estate in Austin all those years ago, was to get a lay of the land for Sark?

The Texas coaching search was not as fun as it should have been

Sarkisian is a good hire for Texas. Then again Herman was a good hire for Texas. Wouldn't surprise me to see Herman succeed somewhere else.

Texas fan: SEC SUCKS! WE DON'T NEED ANYTHING SEC!
(Texas hires Sark)
Texas fan: uh…yeah. HE ROCKED THE SEC!— Mark Passwaters (@mbpRivals) January 2, 2021
You can hire a replacement that fast? Well that’s boring https://t.co/R4RHwNdrC6

Ready to field apologies from Texas fans who said there was no way Tom Herman would want the South Carolina job b/c, you know, he had such secure standing in Austin.
I'll be here all day kids.— @sapakoff (@Sapakoff) January 2, 2021
I love Steve Sarkisian as a coach.
I love redemption stories.
I love this hire for Texas.
I love the fact that Nick Saban is willing to take his reputation and bring these men in and give them a new chapter.
Good luck @CoachSark#HookEm #RollTide #CFBPlayoff— Jim Dunaway (@jimdunaway) January 2, 2021

Great news for Sark.
Saban will get the next best guy.. Freeze maybe? I think Herman might actually be worth a look as well
Freeze isn’t going to be an OC.
OC at bama leads to jobs like texas.. it would still be a step up from Liberty, especially if nothing better opens up this off season. It might not be likely, but definitely possible
No it wouldn’t. Freeze isn’t going to take an OC job anywhere. He can certainly afford to wait for the right opportunity. Liberty pays him $3 million a year. He clearly likes being in charge.
Lots of strong whiskey in Texas.
Shots fired. And more shots taken
Lol!
Another school firing a coach with a winning record, especially after a bowl win in this case. I dont know how this will work out for Sark, but I would watch my back if I were him. You are reportedly going to a school that has been lining up a new coach while the current coach was being given the idea that everything was cool….Juuuust in case no one wanted the job there. But it is after all….Texas. To them, they think integrity is the name of car.
Sark will be back on the market in three years. Win less than ten a year and they will be out looking for a new coach in the middle of a season.
And the crazy thing is, texas has never been the perennial powerhouse that they want their money to convince people they are. A decent season here and there and they feel entitled to something they’ve never even had
:(
This is pretty shocking. Hopefully Orgeron has made inroads with our future OC hire because looking for one at the same time Alabama is isn’t an ideal situation.
This is going to be one wild off season with transfers, free RS year, several new hires…
Wouldn’t surprise me to see Kevin Steele out there with him. I can’t see us keeping him. Some good spots open at Texas, LSU, and probably Florida. Maybe even UT.
Crazy off season coming
You know, an outsider reading this blog might view us as a bizarre collection of crazed, delusional fanatics. However, we look like the most sane, controlled individuals ever created when compared with the Texas administration, power brokers, and fan base. They’re a bunch of raving lunatics!
I believe Sark will do really well by just about every standard. But, if he doesn’t beat OU and win the XII three out of every four years (with a CFP championship sprinkled in here-and-there), he’s going to quickly become the Gus Malzahn of the southwest.
When has Texas ever done that?
Oh, never, at least not since the days of Darrell Royal. I’m saying that’s their “standard”. They might accept one, nine-win season out of every four or five. Not unlike AU, you’d better not lose to your arch-rival. He’s GOT to beat OU next year to create a foundation of of goodwill. An “L” and the sniping will begin.
Herman could eventually make his way to UT.
Bobo and Muschamp to Bama as OC & DC….
I know it’s just a matter of time, so at least he’s going somewhere that will probably never play against Alabama.
You mean like the home and home series scheduled for 2022-2023? Geez, dude, you should study up a little on Bama football.
Full disclosure:
I was saying it more as a joke about the Big 12 as a conference.
