Tom Luginbill believes Michigan’s No. 2 pass defense ranking and dominance throughout most of its games was helped by a relatively weak schedule.

On Disrupt Media with Ryan Brown, the ESPN recruiting analyst and broadcaster pointed out that Ohio State and Maryland were the only top 50 passing offenses that the Wolverines played this season.

“I do think the ranking is reflective of the who’ve they’ve played,” said Luginbill. “I do think the Big Ten is really, really down. Quarterback play is subpar at best.”

Luginbill noted that Ohio State’s Kyle McCord may have been the best opposing QB and he entered the transfer portal due to fan pressure and a lack of a commitment by coach Ryan Day to start him in the Cotton Bowl.

Michigan will face a challenge in the College Football Playoff semifinals from Alabama QB Jalen Milroe, a dangerous runner who displayed solid downfield throwing ability, especially in the second half of the season.

Still, Luginbill acknowledged that Michigan has a talented roster and deserves credit for its performance despite its schedule.

“I don’t think it takes away from how talented they are, how well they execute, how few penalties they garner. And they don’t turn the ball over, and they force turnovers. That’s the recipe,” he said.
